Mathematical Problem Solving
Dear Upstate New York Math Team,
Hello again! The weekend before last brought in a successful Cornell University Big Red Math Competition (CUBRMC) - the 3rd annual! Please read below for details and photos.
We also have an urgent matter. Upstate was invited to send one team to PUMaC, the Princeton University Math Competition on Saturday, November 22. We still have a spot to fill in the team roster, and not much time on the clock.
PUMaC is a very challenging math contest, so we’ve been focusing on teammates who have already competed with us at ARML. If you traveled to ARML, and suddenly find yourself available for PUMaC, please get in touch ASAP. You must live or study in New York State, but not in Long Island or New York City. You must not be part of a math team that also competes in PUMaC, even if you are not selected for their team.
This may also turn out to be a huge opportunity for an up-and-coming star. If you are a high school math problem solver who has just found us, and PUMaC sounds exciting, please send me an email. If you know such an individual, I’d be grateful if you would help us connect.
In other news, the AMC 10 and AMC 12 contests run this week and next. Good luck to all of you taking those contests.

CUBRMC
The Cornell University Big Red Math Competition (CUBRMC) ran on Saturday, October 25. This contest invites teams of 5 students to compete in a Team Round, an Individual Round, and a Proof Round. After the competition there are many activities for students, including a Chess Tournament, tours of campus, and a Keynote Math Lecture by Professor Alex Townsend.

More upstate students before the contest
The Keynote Lecture by Professor Alex Townsend traced the recent development of AI from Google’s Page Rank to the Netflix Prize to ChatGPT. Townsend described the mathematics behind the Algorithm, which has made social media extremely sticky, even addictive.
Results
The first place team and several top students were from the out-of-state Maryland United. Let’s take a look at some of the Upstate New York students who were lauded in the awards ceremony!

The Ithaca High School Pirates placed 3rd in the CUBRMC. Coach Deppe stands with team members.
Upstate NY teammate Benjamin Song from the Monroe County Math League placed 3rd overall, and was also recognized as the top rising star (highest ranking 9th & 10th grader). Ithaca High School Pirate Peter Aravin placed 4th. Upstate NY teammate Jason Lian from the Albany Area Math Circle (sorry, no photo) placed 5th overall.
Congratulations to all the students from Upstate New York who competed at this year’s Big Red Math Competition!
Accolades
Our apologies to Upstate student Elijah Fingerman. In the last newsletter we recognized his achievements, but misnamed him. Did we get it right this time?
Congratulations to Willow Shi for participating in the iGEM Competition, an annual, worldwide synthetic biology event.

We haven’t started our trainings and practices yet.
In the meantime, we recommend Paul Zeitz’s book, The Art and Craft of Problem Solving. Grab a copy and learn!
We are also seeking a volunteer to help bring back the Problem of the Day on our Discord server. It’s a nice project that has impact.
