Mathematical Problem Solving

Dear Upstate New York Math Team,

And we’re back! Happy New Year to you across snowy Upstate New York.

We’re starting out this new year with a talk / problem session centered on Geometry. We also have suggestions for math summer programs.

Title: General Discussion of Geometry Problems

Speaker: James Hartz, University of Buffalo

Abstract: This will be a geometry-focused coaching session on Zoom, transitioning into collaborative problem solving on Discord. I will be going over a handful of archived competition problems without a particular focus outside of the topic of geometry. Problems will range in difficulty. Then, we will meet on Discord and utilize the different voice channels for collaborative work on chosen problems in the second half of the session as well. I intend for the format to be: • Going over as a group 5 or so geometry problems that I have chosen. • Splitting into groups to work on another 5/6 problems before returning and reviewing them all together. Now, let’s talk about your summer math program. Many of the most advanced math students gather together for summer math programs around the country. Read below for some suggestions from in our community. I hope you are able to join in this math community tradition!

Do you have experience with a summer math program (it doesn’t have to be summer) please write back to share your anecdotes and tips with our community.

We will soon be opening the application process to be on this year’s ARML team. The application decision will be based primarily, but not entirely, on contest results.

Summer Math Programs

Here are some suggestions from the Upstate New York Math Team community. Please reply with more suggestions and experiences for us to share in future email newsletters!

Japheth: There are 3 good lists of summer programs that you should know about.

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) supports some of these programs with their Epsilon Award. The most recent awards are here: AMS Young Scholars Programs. They also have a larger list of Opportunities (Click on Math Camps).
The Art of Problem Solving has a bigger, wiki-style list of Math Summer Programs.
The newest list is from the Summer Mathematics Programs Consortium.

My opinionated and specific favorites are: CAMP (middle school students), HCSSiM (high school students), BSM (college students). If you are near NYC this summer, then please look into NYMC and AMP.

Mabbit: I recommend the following:

G2 Math Program at Carnegie Mellon University
PROMYS at Boston University
The Ross Mathematics Program at Otterbein University in Columbus; Ohio and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana
The AwesomeMath (currently virtual).

American Invitational Math Exam (AIME)

Students who did exceedingly well on the AMC contests are invited to continue to the AIME, a 15-question, 3-hour exam. The cutoff scores have been announced:

If you qualified, you will take the AIME at the same location where you qualified. In case this is not convenient or possible, please contact the Competition Manager about the Change of Venue Form.

AIME Competition Dates (you may only take one):

AIME I (main AIME competition date): Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024 between 1:30 pm ET and 5:30 pm ET.

AIME II (alternate AIME competition date): Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024 between 1:30 pm ET and 5:30 pm ET.

USA(J)MO

The AMC contests continue from the AIME to the USA Math Olympiad (USAMO) and the USA Junior Math Olympiad (USAJMO). These are 6-problem proof style exams that take place over two-days for a total of 9-hours. Admission is by invitation only, based on an index score computed from a student’s AMC 10/12 and AIME scores. For many students, the Olympiad problems, which require deep concentration and creativity, are their favorites. New York State Math League (NYSML)

In contrast to the AMC contests, NYSML is a team-based math contest with a variety of events. Students from around NY State compete with their math leagues.

American Regions Math League (ARML)

This team-based math contest takes place in early June each year and is the main focus of our planning. The application form to compete at ARML with the Upstate New York Math Team will be open soon.
