Our last math talk of 2023 is this Sunday. Join us!
Title: Discriminant of quadratic equations
Speaker: Professor Xiaodong Cao, Cornell University
Abstract: The discriminant of quadratic equation $ax^2 + bx + c = 0$ is that famous term $D = b^2 - 4ac$. What does $D$ tell us about the roots of the quadratic, and how can we use it strategically in solving problems? The purpose of this lecture is to show how useful and powerful such a fundamental tool can be.

Math Opportunities
American Invitational Math Exam (AIME)
Students who did exceedingly well on the AMC contests are invited to continue to the AIME, a 15-question, 3-hour exam. The cutoff scores have been announced:
If you qualified, you will take the AIME at the same location where you qualified. In case this is not convenient or possible, please contact the Competition Manager about the Change of Venue Form.
AIME Competition Dates (you may only take one):
AIME I (main AIME competition date): Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024 between 1:30 pm ET and 5:30 pm ET.
AIME II (alternate AIME competition date): Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024 between 1:30 pm ET and 5:30 pm ET.
USA(J)MO
The AMC contests continue from the AIME to the USA Math Olympiad (USAMO) and the USA Junior Math Olympiad (USAJMO). These are 6-problem proof style exams that take place over two-days for a total of 9-hours. Admission is by invitation only, based on an index score computed from a student’s AMC 10/12 and AIME scores. For many students, the Olympiad problems, which require deep concentration and creativity, are their favorites. Anyone can peruse the Olympiad archives at https://artofproblemsolving.com/wiki/index.php/United_States_of_America_Mathematical_Olympiad.
New York State Math League (NYSML)
In contrast to the AMC contests, NYSML is a team-based math contest with a variety of events. Students from around NY State compete with their math leagues.
American Regions Math League (ARML)
This team-based math contest takes place in early June each year and is the main focus of our planning. The application form to compete at ARML with the Upstate New York Math Team will be open soon.
