Mathematical Problem Solving
Dear Upstate New York Math Team,
November is ending this evening, so make sure to turn the page on your wall calendars to December before you go to bed.
December means a quick ride into the holiday season and hopefully time with family. It can also be a great time to stay warm inside to solve a math problem or two.

American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)

American Invitational Math Exam (AIME)
Students who did exceedingly well on the AMC contests are invited to continue to the AIME, a 15-question, 3-hour exam. The cutoff scores will be announced soon.
(Qualification parameters for AIME vary with the results of the AMC 10/12 competitions. For AMC 10, invitations are issued to at least the top 2.5% of all scorers. For AMC 12, invitations are issued to at least the top 5% of all scorers. The exact cutoffs will depend on the difficulty of each competition.

If you qualify, you will take the AIME at the same location where you qualified. In case this is not convenient or possible, please contact the Competition Manager about the Change of Venue Form.
AIME Competition Dates (you may only take one):
AIME I (main AIME competition date): Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024 between 1:30 pm ET and 5:30 pm ET.
AIME II (alternate AIME competition date): Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024 between 1:30 pm ET and 5:30 pm ET.
USA(J)MO
The AMC contests continue from the AIME to the USA Math Olympiad (USAMO) and the USA Junior Math Olympiad (USAJMO). These are 6-problem proof style exams that take place over two-days for a total of 9-hours. Admission is by invitation only, based on an index score computed from a student’s AMC 10/12 and AIME scores. For many students, the Olympiad problems, which require deep concentration and creativity, are their favorites. New York State Math League (NYSML)
In contrast to the AMC contests, NYSML is a team-based math contest with a variety of events. Students from around NY State compete with their math leagues.
American Regions Math League (ARML)
This team-based math contest takes place in early June each year and is the main focus of our planning. The application form to compete at ARML with the Upstate New York Math Team will be open soon.
Accolades
Congratulations to Howard Tang for earning Gold Honour status in the final round of the International Youth Math Challenge (IYMC)!
A quick follow-up from the Cornell University Big Red Math Competition (CUBRMC), we found out that the Upstate team earned the highest score of all the teams on the team round. Go Upstate!
