“You might think that you need to make a choice: small liberal arts college or large research university? But Cornell University's College of Arts & Sciences offers the best of both worlds: a superb and flexible liberal arts education and the extensive resources of an internationally renowned research institution. In Arts & Sciences, you will have access to an uncommonly diverse range of academic opportunities. With 4,000 courses and over 120 minors offered by Cornell’s undergraduate colleges, and two years to explore before declaring one of the 42 majors offered, your educational path will be defined by your own academic interests. Join us for a dynamic conversation about the liberal arts and sciences experience in the College of Arts & Sciences. In this 60-minute session, we’ll provide an overview of the breadth and depth of the academic experience, student services, and our admissions process. We’ll conclude with an interactive Q&A featuring current Arts & Sciences students majoring in Math and related fields. If you’re intellectually curious, eager to explore the unknown, and ready to make an impact, we encourage you to attend!” — The College of Arts and Sciences Admission office
Math Opportunities
American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)
(AMC 10/12 A: Nov 8, 2023 and AMC 10/12 B: Nov 14, 2023)
Since these contests are so popular, we ask students for their AMC scores on our ARML team member application. Students who excel might continue into the invitational contests like the AIME, USAJMO and USAMO.
Please check if your high school can offer these contests. If not, then check https://maa.org/math-competitions/amc-8/locations for other locations.
USA Math Talent Search (USAMTS)
An individual contest that emphasizes technical writing skills. The Round 1 Problems are available at https://usamts.org/Problems/U_Problems.php, and due by 10 PM Eastern on October 16, 2023.
“The USAMTS is one of the ways to enter the process for qualifying to represent the United States at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Students who earn high scores on the USAMTS are invited to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) and can progress further based on their scores on the AIME.”
PRIMES-USA (http://math.mit.edu/research/highschool/primes/usa) is a math research program for high school juniors and sophomores from across the United States. They will work on individual and group research projects under the mentorship of MIT graduate students and postdocs, and faculty from other universities. Students will have weekly telecons with their mentors, write research papers, and present their findings at an annual PRIMES conference at MIT.
To apply, students need to solve a challenging problem set, so please look at the application as early as possible. The deadline for applying to PRIMES-USA is November 30, 2023.
American Regions Math League (ARML)
This team-based math contest takes place in early June each year and is the main focus of our planning. The application form to compete at ARML with the Upstate New York Math Team will be open later this fall.
