The school year has begun, so let’s get started. Our main goal again this year is to train and gather a team to compete at ARML. We gained a lot of momentum and excitement last year, and so there is growing interest in other contests as well.

Please read below for a message about the HMMT (Harvard-MIT Math Contest) from team member Jacob Chung, about the brand new CUBRMC (Cornell University Big Red Mathematics Competition) from Cornell math professor and our board member, Xiaodong Cao, and about several individual math contests.

The HMMT and the CUBRMC have very tight deadlines, so please act quickly.

Join us for the HMMT

As the 2023-2024 school year is beginning for many of us, the math competition season is also coming up fast. In past years, the Upstate New York Math Team has been focused exclusively on preparation for the ARML competition in June. This year, we hope to branch out to other national math contests. While ARML will still remain our primary aim, we will start sending teams to other events such as the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament, the Cornell Big Red Math Competition, and the Princeton University Math Competition. We are trying to generate as much interest as possible; these competitions are amazing opportunities for everyone who participates.

The first contest on the agenda is the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament (HMMT), one of the most prestigious math competitions in the country. The two dates for the tournament are Saturday, November 11, 2023 and Saturday, February 17, 2024, and both take place in Cambridge, MA (at the two sponsoring colleges). They are both full-day events that would require individual transportation to Cambridge, Massachusetts. There are also social events the previous Friday night and educational events the following Sunday which you won’t want to miss! The number of teams that Upstate NY registers will depend on the level of interest. Please see November vs. February | HMMT for more details about the difference between the tournaments. Admission to the tournaments is completely lottery-based, so we can’t guarantee acceptance for any of our teams. For more information about the tournament, visit HMMT. Logistics for the trip will be finalized once we have a team confirmed, but there will likely be a small registration fee for participants.

Importantly, students may not apply to HMMT under two different organizations, so please inquire about the activity of any other math leagues you may be a part of (e.g., Albany Area Math Circle and Emma Willard High School). Because of the tight window of opportunity for tournament applications, responses are due by 9/15/2023.

Announcing the Big Red

The Department of mathematics at Cornell University is excited to invite all mathletes to participate in the very first Big Red Mathematics Competition!

Are you interested in applying to join our ARML team in June? Then make sure you are practicing and developing your mathematical problem solving skills. This may include joining us for practices, the HMMT, CUBRMC, self-study, and also participating in your school math team and local math league.

Here are some other contests that you might find interesting and useful:

American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)

(AMC 10/12 A: Nov 8, 2023 and AMC 10/12 B: Nov 14, 2023)

Since these contests are so popular, we ask students for their AMC scores on our ARML team member application. Students who excel might continue into the invitational contests like the AIME, USAJMO and USAMO.

International Youth Math Challenge (IYMC)

An individual contest that is taken remotely. The first round of qualifying problems is available at https://iymc.info/docs/IYMC_Qualification_Round_2023.pdf, and is due on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

USA Math Talent Search (USAMTS)

An individual contest that emphasizes technical writing skills. The Round 1 Problems are available at https://usamts.org/Problems/U_Problems.php, and due by 10 PM Eastern on October 16, 2023.
