The Upstate New York Math Team promotes and supports educational and personal enrichment in the field of mathematics. We are an ongoing community of math competitors from upstate New York. Our main focus is the ARML (American Regions Math League) competition at the end of each school year.

Please subscribe to our newsletter so that we can update you on our activities. We are always looking for pre-college math students to join our activities and to participate with us in math competitions.

We’re also seeking parents, math educators and professionals to join us as volunteers, as well as supporters to help us achieve our goals.

I’m Japheth Wood, one of the Upstate New York Math Team organizers. I’m writing to invite you to our Welcome Back Open House meeting on Sunday, September 27 at 11am. This will be an online event.

The Upstate New York Math Team gathers high school math students from all over Upstate New York for math problem solving and math contests. We are proud of a rich history that goes back to the early 1980s. Join us as we move forward!

Mathematical Problem Solving

Dear Upstate New York Math Team,

We had our ARML Kickoff Meeting a few weeks ago and are now looking forward to seeing many of you at NYSML in Rochester on April 18. We are building our team for the 2026 ARML competition at the end of May.

The application form to join the Upstate New York ARML Team is open, and we’re already starting to send out invitations. Click the button to get started! After the button, please read a message from Coach Babbitt.

Apply to our Team!

Important: you must apply to be on this year’s ARML team, even if you were on the team last year. Team members must live or study in New York state, but not Long Island, New York City, or Westchester County, which all have their own ARML teams.

Please help us connect with math students around the state. Share this email with them and encourage them to apply.

This February and March sees several events, and lots of preparation for ARML 2026! Read on for more information about competition opportunities, new guidelines for ARML team selection, a revamped ARML team application, and the start of a textbook list! Many of these updates can also be found at our website: upstatenymath.org

Competition Opportunities

Did you know that the AMC competitions are only one opportunity out of many? There are many regional and online contests that you can do that offer great math problem solving experiences! This past fall we sent teams to competitions like CUBRMC at Cornell, and PUMaC at Princeton. Local leagues sent teams to HMMT November at Harvard. There are even more competitions on the way!

On February 14th Upstate New York competed at HMMT February at MIT! Read more about the contest here: https://www.hmmt.org/
The ARML Power Contest is a competition that happens twice a year: once in November, and once in February. This year the February contest window was February 21st to March 7th. This is a contest for local leagues, so Upstate NY will not be fielding teams. If the coach or a parent of your local league is available, they may be able to administer the test for you! Purple Comet! is an online competition that is perfect for local leagues to compete in. If your school has a math club, try grabbing some friends, finding a supervisor, and signing up! All you need is a proctor and a room. If space at your school is rare, you could even do the competition in a dining room! If you're a student that's really far away from the rest of the team, Purple Comet! also offers Mixed Team opportunities if you want to do the contest online over a platform like Discord. Distance teams are a new change in 2026! We will probably not be fielding teams from Upstate NY, but that doesn't stop Upstate NY students from forming their own teams! NYSML is a New York State travel competition happening on April 18th at Webster Thomas High School, just northeast of Rochester. Upstate NY does not field teams to NYSML out of policy. This is a competition for local leagues. If you're near a math team that has 15 or more students, you can contact them to see if you can compete on their team! SMT will happen from April 17th to 18th at Stanford. Going in-person is an ambitious travel goal AND it conflicts with NYSML, so we plan to organize a team for SMT Online. SMT Online will be happening on April 19th. Keep your eyes open for an announcement for our registration! Read more about the contest here: https://www.stanfordmathtournament.org/competitions/smt-2026-online
ARML Local will be happening during the weekend of April 17th to April 18th! This is another contest perfect for local leagues, and as such Upstate NY will not field teams. The American Masters of Mathematics is a NEW travel competition that will be held for the first time in 2026. It will run from May 22nd to May 25th in Denver, Colorado, and will host maybe 300-400 high school students who will sit for a 5-question, 4.5-hour test, with difficulty at the "high AIME-low USAMO" level. I've been sent some information about the competition and I can tell there will be a high amount of interactivity. This looks exciting! There are more math contests that we could be doing that we don't know about. If you want to do a contest that hasn't been listed here, let us know and we can work to make it happen!

Fielding an Upstate NY team needs a lot of organization. We've got a dedicated group of students that have been organizing our travel competitions this year: Alex Kim, Jason Lian, Tianze Qiu, and Brian Sun. Their amazing work is giving us the opportunity to compete at all these travel competitions. Watch out for their announcements for more contests throughout the Spring!

ARML Team Selection Guidelines

We have been fielding Upstate NY teams to ARML since 2021, and each year we need to organize ourselves into groups of 15 students, plus alternate students. We have also had to ask students to apply in future years when they're more ready. We want to make this process as transparent as possible, so we have created a document of the guidelines we follow while choosing the teams. They are available on the website right now on our ARML 2026 page.

There are two major changes we are making to the student application process:

The teams are now labeled "Vector" and "Manifold" instead of A and B.
On the application form, students can give their preference as to which team they would rather apply for. We cannot make guarantees that students will necessarily get their choice.

Our goal is to make the application process clear while giving students the agency to advocate for their preferred contest experience. We hope that this helps make everyone's experience as fun as possible!

ARML Application Form

We have made significant changes to the application form. The application reflects the new Vector and Manifold teams. It also includes a new section for parents and guardians who wish to volunteer to help run the contest. ARML is always short on volunteers, and requests 2 volunteers per team of 15. We are very proud to say that we have always had several people volunteer, and this year we're working to make the process smoother! For all volunteers that sign up, we will be sending out information on volunteer training as ARML approaches. There will be trainings held at Penn State on the evening of Friday, May 29th that our volunteers need to attend, and we will send out the room information as soon as we get it.

The application form is live now! It can be found on our website under the ARML 2026 page. Our registration period will end in late April, and we will finalize our teams in May.

Textbook Recommendations

We all know that math is hard, but learning math can be even harder. Getting the right resources can be tricky. To help students get oriented with study materials, we have made a document with textbook recommendations. It includes textbooks that focus on the four subjects of Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry, and Number Theory at various levels, as well as general textbooks covering all four and topics textbooks covering a specific area of a subject. The document also has our advice on how to read textbooks, where to get used books, how to read solutions to get the most out of them, and how to improve at math in general. This document is live on the website now under the Training page.

Summer Math Programs

Now is a great time to apply to summer math program. Here are two lists for you to review:

Kudos

Our Upstate alumni have done well on the Putnam Exam, considered the world’s most challenging university-level math contest. The contest is so hard that the median score is often zero points (out of 120).

Mason Eyler was our ARML team captain in 2024 and is now a student at Stanford University. Mason earned an Honorable Mention on the Putnam Exam (for participants who rank between 26th and 100th place).

Gustav Gebbie was an Upstate Team member for the 2023 ARML and is not a junior at Vassar College and was recognized by the Putnam Committee for ranking between 201st and 500th place on the exam.

Our February 2026 HMMT team (team members Benjamin, David, Elijah, Max, Tianze, and Thomas) came in 32nd on the team round, and team member Benjamin Song ranked 42nd overall (with excellent performance on the Algebra and Number Theory and also the Geometry rounds), earning him an invitation to the HMMT Invitational.

We had our ARML Kickoff Meeting yesterday morning, and officially started building our team for the 2026 ARML competition at the end of May.

(If you were there, you saw that I experienced some technical difficulties. I figured it out: a bluetooth speaker somewhere in my house grabbed control of my audio. Coach Villani’s presentation was split between my screen and the speaker out of my earshot. Ah, well. Bluetooth.)

Dear Upstate New York Math Team,

Here’s your reminder: we’re having our ARML Kickoff Meeting TOMORROW! That’s Sunday morning, February 8, at 10am.

The Upstate New York Math Team community, especially students and parents, are welcome to join us at 10am tomorrow to learn about our main activity each year, ARML (the American Regions Math League). We’ll share information about our team selection process, the logistics, and the competition itself.

ARML is on Saturday, May 30. That means that we have about 3.5 months to recruit, invite, and train our teams, before we travel to ARML in State College, Pennsylvania. Our Kickoff means that we’re officially starting this process tomorrow!

P.P.S.: Update on HMMT:

Again, thanks for your help on building our HMMT team this year. Our team will compete next weekend at Harvard and MIT. Contests like these, organized by undergraduates at colleges and universities around the country, are growing in popularity. Typically, our team members have traveled to ARML with us, and seek further competition throughout the school year. Members of our team must live or study in New York State, but not in Long Island or New York City. They must not be part of a math team that also competes in that particular contest, even if they are not selected for their team.

To join our team, you must live or study in New York State, but not in Long Island or New York City. Also, you must not be part of a math team that also competes in HMMT, November or February, like the Albany Area Math Circle or the Westchester Area Math Circle, even if you are not selected for their team.

Dear Upstate New York Math Team,

Happy New Year!

The Fall math competition season brought us a successful Cornell University Big Red Math Competition (CUBRMC), an exhilarating Princeton University Math Competition (PUMaC), and the AMC 10 and 12 contests. What other contests do you participate in?

The Upstate New York Math Team will soon start recruiting for our 2026 American Regions Math League (ARML) teams, so please keep an eye out for the announcements. ARML is our key event each year. This year’s event takes place on May 30 at several sites around the country, and attracts thousands of enthusiastic high school (and a few middle school) students.

I do have an urgent request for you today: we have been invited to send a team to the Harvard MIT Math Tournament (HMMT) on the February 14th weekend. We still have two spots to fill to make a minimal team roster, and could add as many as four additional students. We have until the end of the day on Tuesday, January 13, to make our roster.

Like PUMaC, HMMT is a very challenging math contest, so we’ve been focusing on teammates who have already competed with us at ARML. If you have already experienced ARML, and suddenly find yourself available for HMMT on February 14, please get in touch ASAP. You must live or study in New York State, but not in Long Island or New York City. You must not be part of a math team that also competes in HMMT (November or February), even if you are not selected for their team. That includes the Albany Area Math Circle and the Westchester Area Math Circle.

This may also turn out to be a huge opportunity for an up-and-coming star. If you are a high school math problem solver who has just found us, and HMMT sounds exciting, please (1) send me an email and also (2) make an account on their website, hmmt.org. If you know such an individual, I’d be grateful if you would help us connect.

Our Story: Rebuilding a Legacy of Excellence

The Upstate New York Math Team has a deep history, originally competing in the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) with success dating back to 1992. After a period of inactivity, a dedicated group of volunteer math instructors and enthusiasts revived the team in 2019. Since then, we have incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit—meaning your gift is fully tax-deductible—to secure long-term stability and leadership from across the region.

Momentum and Achievement

In just a few short years, we’ve rebuilt our momentum, fielding teams in ARML and expanding our reach. Our advanced students now regularly compete in prestigious contests like the Cornell University Big Red Math Competition (CUBMRC), the Princeton University Math Competition (PUMaC), and the Harvard-MIT Math Contest (HMMT). Our team and individual members have begun earning top-scorer awards at these competitions, confirming the talent of Upstate New York students. This success is fueled by a student-centered culture where team members volunteer to teach lessons and organize trips, supported entirely by an all-volunteer staff and alumni mentors.

The Barrier: Contest Fees vs. Equity

Contest registration fees represent the single largest cost item for the team. While well-funded teams are able to cover all costs, including travel and fees, we have historically had to pass these costs onto families. For many high-potential students, these fees become a critical barrier, limiting access to invaluable opportunities. By raising $10,000 today, we can remove this financial pressure entirely, opening the door to more students and strengthening mathematical achievement across our region.

These contests are not just tests; they are critical proving grounds that build confidence, test problem-solving under pressure, and prepare students for rigorous university programs. Hello again! The weekend before last brought in a successful Cornell University Big Red Math Competition (CUBRMC) - the 3rd annual! Please read below for details and photos.

CUBRMC

The Cornell University Big Red Math Competition (CUBRMC) ran on Saturday, October 25. This contest invites teams of 5 students to compete in a Team Round, an Individual Round, and a Proof Round. After the competition there are many activities for students, including a Chess Tournament, tours of campus, and a Keynote Math Lecture by Professor Alex Townsend.

More upstate students before the contest

The Keynote Lecture by Professor Alex Townsend traced the recent development of AI from Google’s Page Rank to the Netflix Prize to ChatGPT. Townsend described the mathematics behind the Algorithm, which has made social media extremely sticky, even addictive.

Results

The first place team and several top students were from the out-of-state Maryland United. Let’s take a look at some of the Upstate New York students who were lauded in the awards ceremony!

The Ithaca High School Pirates placed 3rd in the CUBRMC. Coach Deppe stands with team members.

Upstate NY teammate Benjamin Song from the Monroe County Math League placed 3rd overall, and was also recognized as the top rising star (highest ranking 9th & 10th grader). Ithaca High School Pirate Peter Aravin placed 4th. Upstate NY teammate Jason Lian from the Albany Area Math Circle (sorry, no photo) placed 5th overall.

Congratulations to all the students from Upstate New York who competed at this year’s Big Red Math Competition!

Mathematical Problem Solving

Dear Upstate New York Math Team,

I’m Japheth Wood, one of the Upstate New York Math Team coaches. It seems like forever ago since this school year started, so I’m grateful to finally find time this weekend to write to you.

Our team is focused on gathering high school math students from all over Upstate New York for math problem solving and math contests. The first contest this year, the Big Red Math Competition, happens in two weeks at Cornell University. The last contest, ARML, is our main objective, and takes place at the end of May in State College, Pennsylvania. There are many opportunities for mathematical problem solving in between.

I have updates to share from our community, information about summer math programs, and a recommended book. We’ve had some challenges getting everything started, so please look for several volunteer opportunities (especially for our mathletes and parents) below. Help us move forward!

If you will be at the Big Red, please find me and say hello. I’m looking forward to gathering in person!

Contests

Each year, our main contest focus is ARML, the American Regions Math League. Our ARML team is regionally defined - teammates are from all parts of New York State except Long Island, New York City, and Westchester County.

The first contest this year is the Cornell University Big Red Math Competition (CUBRMC) on Saturday, October 25. If you can gather together a team of 5 students from your school, we recommend it! We’ve formed one team of students from across Upstate NY, and would like to hear from you if you are interested in participating on an additional team. The registration deadline is very close, October 14. Please get in touch!

We recommend that every student take the AMC 10 or AMC 12 contests. Those are traditionally hosted at schools, so check in with your math teacher. When you apply to be on the Upstate New York ARML team, we will ask you for your AMC scores (if you have them).

We’ll mention below that some veteran Upstate New York Math Team members are organizing teams for the “spicier” contests like HMMT. We do not recommend those contests to new mathletes. If you’ve traveled with us to ARML, then you know what you’d be in for, so please get in touch if you are interested.

Accolades

A shout out to Mason Eyler (Upstate former team captain) and Brendan Caseria (Upstate former Problem Squad member) who were inaugural staff members at Camp Sierpinski this past summer.

Upstate student Elijah Fingerman deserves huge accolades for starting a math circle for local elementary schools in the Hudson Valley, where he is considering the local library as well. Eugene is also in the process of organizing a math team at his new school.

We’re enjoying seeing four students continue efforts by last year’s team captain Jacob Chung to organize experienced Upstate students into teams to compete in the “spicier” contests like HMMT. Jacob has gone off to college, and we’re now benefitting from the leadership efforts of Alex Kim '27, of Corning, Brian Sun '27, of the Albany Area Math Circle, Jason Lian '27, of the Albany Area Math Circle, and Tianze Qiu '28, of the Monroe County Math League.

Two of our team members Carol Li and Muling Lu were interviewed about their experiences at the 2025 ARML in the Amherst Bee: Local math team takes part in national competition.

Coach Finn Goehrig received the Staff Appreciation Award from The Gifted Math Program at the University of Buffalo. Congratulations, Finn!

Summer Math Programs

I did participate in a summer math program when I was a high school student, and the spirit of mathematical discovery that I experienced there has always stayed with me. It was the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics (HCSSiM), one of the longest running programs.

The Evolving Summer Math Programs Ecosystem

You're invited to an online session, "The Evolving Summer Math Programs Ecosystem." In this session, you'll get to learn about the whole ecosystem of summer math programs, past, present, and future. You'll learn about how these programs change access to deep mathematical thinking and how we're working to expand that access, new collaborations to improve and grow our work, and how we're engaging the broader mathematical community. It's an exciting period of growth and we hope you'll join us to see what we're doing! The session is being run by the new Summer Math Programs Consortium, a collaboration between many different programs across the country.

Contests

Accolades

A shout out to Mason Eyler (Upstate former team captain) and Brendan Caseria (Upstate former Problem Squad member) who were inaugural staff members at Camp Sierpinski this past summer.

Upstate student Eugene Fingerman deserves huge accolades for starting a math circle for local elementary schools in the Hudson Valley, where he is considering the local library as well. Eugene is also in the process of organizing a math team at his new school.

Two of our team members Carol Li and Muling Lu were interviewed about their experiences at the 2025 ARML in the Amherst Bee: Local math team takes part in national competition.

Coach Finn Goehrig received the Staff Appreciation Award from The Gifted Math Program at the University of Buffalo. Congratulations, Finn!

Upstate New York Math Team

Mathematical Problem Solving

Dear Upstate New York Math Team,

We competed! Our two teams and two alternates traveled to State College, Pennsylvania, to participate in the 2025 American Regions Math League (ARML) competition.

We are strengthening as a team; we placed 13th and 37th in the B Division, and our alternates’ team placed 2nd in the Alternate Division. Our highest scoring student was Benjamin Song, a 9th grader at Pittsford Sutherland High School near Rochester (Monroe County), who correctly solved all individual problems and made it to the tiebreakers.

I want to mention one other achievement: this year we secured our status as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and so your financial support is now tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Our webpage now features a DONATE button in the top right corner, and I’ve placed a copy of the button below. Your gift will allow us to grow as an organization and accomplish more in the next cycle.

Equally valuable - please volunteer your time. Our team needs drivers, chaperones, proctors and graders during the ARML weekend (my deepest gratitude to the many parents who traveled to ARML with me, Coach Villani and Coach Babbitt). During the school year there are many ways that you can help us succeed. Please get in touch if you are interested.

Press Release

UPSTATE NEW YORK – June 6, 2025 – The Upstate New York Math Team, composed of 32 of the region's most advanced high school math students, demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork at the recent American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) competition held at Penn State University on May 31. The team faced off against thousands of talented peers from across the nation in one of the country's premier high school mathematics contests.

"We are incredibly proud of all our students' dedication and their impressive performance at ARML," said Dr. Japheth Wood, Lead Coach for the Upstate New York Math Team and math professor at Bard College. "They've showcased not only their strong mathematical abilities but also their commitment to teamwork and problem-solving at a national level."

The Upstate New York Math Team fielded two main teams and two alternates, with students representing diverse regions across the state, including the Albany area, Ithaca, Corning, Rochester, the Mid-Hudson Valley, the Buffalo area, Rockland County, and the Southern Tier. Team Captain Jacob C. from Corning led one of the main teams.

The Upstate New York B1 team scored a total of 150 points, securing an impressive 13th place in the B Division. The Upstate New York B2 team also performed well, scoring 89 points and earning 37th place in the B Division. Additionally, the team's alternates, competing as Alternates PSU 1, achieved an outstanding 2nd place in the alternate division with 75 points.

Individual brilliance shone through as well. Benjamin Song, a 9th grader at Pittsford Sutherland High School near Rochester (Monroe County), was the highest-scoring student for Upstate New York, solving all 8 Individual problems and correctly answering the second tiebreaker problem in just 113 seconds. This exceptional performance secured him 47th place among all ARML students nationally.

The Upstate New York Math Team, with a legacy stretching back to ARML's founding in 1976, has a storied history of success, including past first-place finishes. The team's mission is to promote and support educational and personal enrichment in mathematics by fostering an ongoing community of math competitors from upstate New York. Team members are selected through a highly competitive process, evaluating their performance in contests like the AMC and NYSML. Beyond the competition, ARML provides invaluable opportunities for students to network, engage with higher-level math, and strengthen the pre-college math community in New York State.

The Upstate New York Math Team is incorporated as a nonprofit and relies on the direct support of families. The organization is actively seeking gifts, donations, and volunteers from individuals and organizations across Upstate New York and beyond to continue its mission of encouraging participation and creating opportunities for mathematical excellence, especially for under-resourced students.

About the Upstate New York Math Team: The Upstate New York Math Team, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting educational and personal enrichment in mathematics. Its mission is to identify and bring together an ongoing community of math competitors from upstate New York for training, mentorship, and competition, fostering a love for mathematics and encouraging students of all backgrounds to pursue excellence in the field.

Dear Upstate New York Math Team,

Important reminder - we have a practice this Sunday morning, 9am to 10am. Join us!

Our Team Selection Committee is still working on applications to join our ARML team. I think they’ll finish up by this weekend. We currently have enough applications to form a strong A Team. It looks like we’ll be able to field a full B team, but we are very thin on alternates. Given that, we’ve kept the application form open, just in case another student applies. You can find the link below.

ARML for us will continue to be at Penn State in State College, Pennsylvania on May 30 and 31. The ARML organizers have opened a new site in New Hampshire which will draw many of the teams that are east of us away from the Penn State site.

We had a great time at NYSML on April 5. Upstate students are spread across many teams, and it was a nice opportunity to reconnect. Here are the 2025 NYSML Problems and Team Results (NYC won the A Division and the Albany Area Math Circle won the B Division).

Many still have spots available. Some programs I’ve had good experiences with, or heard good things about are: I just heard from National Math Camps that they have spots for 11-14 year olds at their new programs. The amazing Bard Math CAMP (which I run) is for 5th to 8th graders. The Williams College Math Camp is relatively close, in western Massachusetts. The Ross Math Program is the oldest program I know of. The New York Math Circle is in Manhattan. Mathily is near Philly. The Hampshire College Summer Studies in Math is my all time favorite. Canada/USA Mathcamp is one of the best. MathPath is for younger students. AwesomeMath is brought to you by the directors of Purple Comet, and includes Coach Babbitt on their faculty.

I’m very excited to welcome back* Mason Eyler this Saturday for our next talk: Generating Functions. Mason was our A Team captain last year at ARML, and is now a first year student at Stanford.

*Mason presented an amazing talk in November on Game Theory Type Problems.

If you have time to preview Generating Functions, I recommend section 4.3 in Paul Zeitz’s Art and Craft of Problem Solving. Whether you preview the topic or use Mason’s talk as an introduction, I’m pretty confident that you’ll be motivated after the talk to learn more.

Let me also take this opportunity to remind you to apply to be on our ARML team. Being on the American Regions Math League (ARML) team involves travel to State College, Pennsylvania on May 30 and 31, as well as preparing in advance, including our remaining practices. Join us tomorrow morning, March 9, for a Number Theory talk by Upstate team member Taran Knutson. Details below.
Apply to join the 2025 ARML team and represent Upstate New York on May 30 and 31. Click on the button below. We are planning to send 2 teams of 15 students plus some alternates. It’s a great event, and a unique chance to gather with top math students from across Upstate New York.
Our ARML Problem of the Day has started. A challenging math problem from a past ARML competition is delivered each morning in the #problem-discussion channel of our Discord server. This is a great way to get in some daily math problem solving practice, and has already sparked some excellent engagement.

Accolades

This seems to have happened last year, but we just heard about it. Alexandra Schmidt was named as the new Henry L. Thompson Chair in Mathematics at the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY. Ms. Schmidt has been one of the forces behind the Albany Area Math Circle for more than a decade.

An Update on HMMT from Emily via Jacob”

“Good news! Our team placed 12th in the Team Round and 16th in the Guts Round out of 100 total teams. Also, Michael Aram placed top 20 individually in the Combinatorics round, and Emily Yu placed top 50 in the Algebra and Number Theory round. Upstate NY placed in the top 30 teams overall, which guarantees us a spot in the competition next year!”

Congratulations again to Alex, Benjamin, Celene, Emily, Jacob, Michael, and Tianze!

Upstate New York Math Team

Mathematical Problem Solving

Dear Upstate New York Math Team,

We have an amazing double-header this weekend, with a math talk on Saturday morning by Coach Cao, and Team Training #2 on Sunday morning with Coach Villani. Everyone is welcome, and I hope you will join us. The Zoom links are below.

In other news, our ARML Problem of the Day in our discord server will start on Monday in the #problem-discussion channel. This is a great way to get in some daily math problem solving practice, and I hope it will spark some discussion. (Do you know a good way to reply to the message without inadvertently providing a spoiler?)

And the Application Form for our ARML team will appear soon, I promise. We are planning to send 2 teams of 15 students plus some alternates. It’s a great event, and a unique chance to gather with top math students from across Upstate New York.

Accolades

Mason Eyler earned an Honorable Mention on the Putnam Exam by scoring somewhere between 48 and. 66 points out of 120, and placing between 26th and 100th place. Mason was one of five Stanford students earning honorable mention, and the team placed 3rd behind MIT and Harvard. The Putnam is known as the world’s toughest math contest for undergraduates, and is held on the first Saturday of each year. The median score on the Putnam exam was again 0 points (which, admittedly, is better than nothing).

Hiram Golze is a 2024 Edyth May Sliffe Award Winner in recognition for “Dedication to Motivating Students in Mathematics”. Hiram is an UTAH ARML team coach and presented an Introduction to Induction to us in fall 2023.

Alex, Benjamin, Celene, Emily, Jacob, Michael, and Tianze competed in the February 2025 HMMT competition. Jacob wrote: “It went pretty well! We put up some good team numbers and were hoping to reach top 30 to get an automatic return invite! A parent wrote that, “I think they did great at yesterday's guts round, scoring 180 points in total. Very well done!”.
